THE BRIEF

This project centers on a collaboration with Kids Kabin, a children’s charity based in Newcastle upon Tyne that serves disadvantaged communities across the North East. The organisation provides young people with opportunities, resources, and creative environments designed to empower them, nurture their talents, build new skills, and cultivate a stronger sense of self. Through these efforts, Kids Kabin aims to inspire positive change within local neighbourhoods and contribute to their long-term regeneration.

Kids Kabin sought support in elevating and expanding its communication efforts across multiple channels to increase visibility, attract broader support, and strengthen recognition of its impact.

A key challenge for the charity was identifying innovative, engaging, and accessible ways for participating children to share their stories and experiences. They were also looking for communication approaches that would resonate with funding bodies and stakeholders, effectively highlighting the outcomes, successes, and ongoing influence of the organisation’s work.

THE EXECUTION

In response, the project focused on developing a tool that would enable children to communicate their feedback, reflections, and personal experiences at Kids Kabin, while also capturing broader insights. The outcome was the Kids Kabin Adventure Journal, a personalised, ongoing booklet provided to every participating child and designed to be built upon throughout their time at the charity.

The journal is structured around a series of short, guided activities that prompt children to reflect on their experiences, articulate their thoughts, and express their emotions. Beyond facilitating communication, these activities support the development of identity, confidence, self-esteem, and emotional awareness.

The journal also serves as a valuable touchpoint for parents, offering a clear record of each child’s growth and progress. For the organisation, it introduces a consistent, structured method for gathering stories, feedback, and qualitative data to share with funders and other stakeholders.

Additionally, a new digital workshop was introduced, teaching children the foundations of animation through accessible software. Participants created personalised characters and short animated clips inspired by their own ideas and narratives. These child-created characters were later incorporated into a refreshed visual language for Kids Kabin, applied across key communication touchpoints such as annual reports, digital platforms, and data presentations, ensuring the children’s voices and creativity remained central to the charity’s storytelling.
